What is Search Engine Optimization?

To be on top of your customers’ minds, your business needs to stay on top of search results and rank higher – at all times.

Be the focus in your industry, let your customers see your brand anytime they type a search query related to your brand, your business needs to rank to stay on top of search results all the time.

Search engines operate in three stages: crawling, which is the discovery stage, indexing, which is the filing stage, and ranking, which is the retrieval stage.

How do search engines actually work?

Crawling is the first step. Web crawlers are sent out by search engines to find new pages and record information about them. These web crawlers are also known as ‘spiders’ or ‘robots’. Their goal is to discover new web pages that exist, as well as to check the content on pages they’ve previously visited to see if it has changed or been updated.

Indexing process comes next. A search engine decides whether or not to use the content it has crawled during the indexing process. A search engine will include a crawled web page in its index if it determines that it is worthy. At the end of the ranking process, this index is used. A web page or other piece of material that has been indexed is filed and saved in a database so that it can be retrieved later. Most online pages that contain unique and valuable content are placed into the index. A website could be excluded from the index if:

  • The page or domain lacked inbound links
  • It couldn’t be crawled
  • Its content is considered duplicate
  • Its content is considered low value or spammy

Ranking comes as the third and ultimately most crucial phase. Only once crawling and indexing are finished can ranking take place. Your website can be ranked once a search engine has crawled and indexed it.

More than 150 ranking factors are used by search engines to categorize and rank content, and they all fall under one of the three SEO pillars: technical, on-page, or off-page optimization.

For each query, search engines like Google utilize an algorithm or set of rules to decide which pages to display. To decide the rankings of their SERPs, these algorithms, which have become incredibly complicated over time, consider hundreds or even thousands of different ranking indicators.

Search engines, however, base their evaluation of a site’s quality and where it should rank on three key metrics:
